Stories of America: Building Meaningful Collections Through Picture Books

Inspired by Tom Tober’s Teaching Stories of America article https://www.slj.com/story/Teaching-Stories-America, I’ve been intentional about adding picture books that highlight diverse voices, untold histories, and the everyday heroes who shape our country. Tom—who many of us know through his professional learning sessions with KEDC—reminds us that thoughtfully curated collections help students see themselves in stories while also building empathy and understanding of others.

The titles I’m recommending this quarter invite rich conversations around resilience, freedom, innovation, and civic identity, including This Very Tree, Juneteenth for Mazie, Go Forth and Tell, Her Right Foot, and Revolutionary Prudence Wright. Several of these selections also pair with Novel Effect, allowing soundscapes and activities to enhance classroom and library read-alouds. Whether you’re refreshing a classroom library or expanding your media center collection, these books offer powerful entry points into America’s stories—making history accessible, engaging, and meaningful for young learners.
