Racing Through History and Science: 4th Grade Olympic Adventures

In Science Lab, 4th grade students combined history, civics, and science in an exciting Olympic-themed lesson!

We began by learning about the history of the Olympic Games, discussing where they originated and how they have grown into a worldwide event that brings countries together. Students explored how the Olympics connect to civics, including national pride, global cooperation, and the importance of rules and fairness in competition.

Next, we shifted to the science behind downhill skiing. Students learned how force, gravity, friction, and motion impact how a skier moves down a slope. We discussed how the steepness of a hill and surface texture can change speed and performance.

To bring learning to life, students designed and built their own zip lines and created characters to race down! They tested how different variables affected movement and speed, applying their understanding of force and motion in a hands-on way.

It was a fantastic Friday of cross-curricular learning—where science, history, and civics all came together in true Olympic spirit!
