From Learners to Leaders

Second graders at Glenn Marshall Elementary in Richmond, Kentucky are learning all about Martin Luther King, Jr. and how we can still learn from him today. Classroom teacher, Mrs. Kelly Dyal, began by showing students an historical photograph from the March on Washington in 1963. Students used turn and talk strategies to notice and wonder about what they see. Student discussion led to real world challenges like segregation, courage, and non violent protest.

The class then delved deeper into the “why” of this march by reading several books about civil rights including: Martin Luther King, Jr. and the March on Washington by Frances E. Ruffin. Student teacher, Ms. Rylee Ross, led students in discussion about what kind of person Dr. King was and the qualities that made him a great leader. Students’ ideas were recorded on an anchor chart made by Ms. Ross. This chart serves as a daily reminder for both the students and teachers to be leaders like Dr. King and continue the work.
