Curious About Culture

Our first-grade students took an exciting step into the world of culture through hands-on learning, discussion, and creativity. Students explored what culture means and discovered that everyone has unique traditions, foods, celebrations and ways of living that make them who they are. Students created colorful culture lap books. One student even said I colored the front of my lap book red, white, and blue because those are our countries colors. Each section of the lap book highlighted an important part of culture- such as foods, music, and art. As they colored and assembled their books, we discussed and reflected on our own experiences. Students learned that culture is something we all have, and something we can share with others. This activity was so fun and sparked unique discussions as students talked about the similarities and differences of their own cultures with each other. We were able to build understanding, respect, and appreciation for the different backgrounds within our classroom.
