The fifth graders at Lynn Camp Elementary School in Knox County, Kentucky, had the chance to showcase their knowledge of geography and the cultures of two American Indian regions. The students had learned about seven American Indian regions. They worked with a partner or individually to write three paragraphs comparing and contrasting two of the regions. They then got to create a visual for their projects. The visuals ranged from slideshow presentations, totem poles, teepees, wigwams, and drawings.
Administrators observed some of the students in class as they worked on the projects. The students were able to answer questions about why the regions had different clothing, food, homes, and other artifacts. They were able to explain the impact the geography had on the adaptations the tribes had to make to live there.
When the students completed their projects, they presented their visuals to their classmates. The classmates practiced their listening skills and asked questions about the presentation.
It was great to see history come to life and students explaining why American Indians created the homes, clothing, and tools that they used.
