In my 5th Grade Classroom, at times it can be challenging to motivate my student writers to engage and strengthen their writing practice. Upon reflecting on this dilemma, I decided to do a little deep dive into different websites that allow for intentional and rigorous writing practice. The website that has captivated myself and my students is wewillwrite.com.
As the teacher, you get to choose the writing topics for the students to write about. Topics can range from narrative to informative, first-person to third-person perspective, present time to the future. Each game play lasts about 25 minutes where students will compete anonymously within teams where they vote on the writings that were the most interesting, most accurate, or evokes different emotions from the audience as determined by the topic.
The best part…students are practicing to write well and I am able to informally monitor their writing & be intentional when planning for supports. My class has started to ask to play on this website for their indoor recess. You will not hear me complain about indoor recess when students are wishing to “play” wewillwrite.com!
