Building Student Leadership Through Leader in Me at Rockcastle County Schools
Rockcastle County Schools have emphasized student leadership this year through the implementation of the Leader in Me framework, supporting key social studies and civics skills such as responsibility, cooperation, and active citizenship. At Brodhead Elementary School, teachers and staff focus on one leadership habit each month, giving students structured opportunities to practice skills aligned with civic readiness and community involvement.
Classroom instruction intentionally connects the monthly habit to social studies concepts, including making responsible choices, respecting others’ perspectives, and understanding individual roles within a group. Students reflect on how leadership habits apply to classroom responsibilities, academic goals, and everyday interactions, reinforcing the idea that good citizens contribute positively to their communities.
These civic and leadership themes are reinforced in the elementary library through purposeful literature and collaborative STEM activities. Books highlight characters who demonstrate qualities of good citizenship, while team-based STEM challenges encourage students to practice communication, shared decision-making, and problem-solving. Through these activities, students learn that leadership and citizenship require cooperation, accountability, and respect for others.
By consistently integrating Leader in Me habits across learning spaces, students are developing the knowledge and skills necessary for civic participation. This approach supports social studies goals by helping students understand their responsibilities as members of a classroom, school, and community, preparing them to be informed, respectful, and engaged citizens within Rockcastle County and beyond.
