Students in my 5th grade Social Studies class enjoyed a “Thanksgiving Feast!” Students were learning about the colonists and early settlers. Plymouth Colony was on our list of historical discussions, so students sampled foods that “may” have been at the first Thanksgiving! Students enjoyed beans, corn, squash, peas, carrots, cornbread and sourdough bread! Mr. Wheeler couldn’t afford to provide the students with lobster, so they had turkey instead. Students discussed how turkey probably wasn’t on their menu that first year, but nevertheless it was enjoyed by the kids! Students discussed the importance of Plymouth and the idea of self-government through the Mayflower Compact! Students also discussed the importance of community and working together to make the community a better place, just as the Pilgrims and the Wampanoag Tribe did through their alliance. Students also compared and contrasted Plymouth and Jamestown. They compared the cooperation and/or conflict between the settlers and the indigenous peoples in each settlement! Fun and full bellies were had by all!
